Duke Kahanamoku from: "Full Speed Ahead!" The At Youth's Companion Magazine (1928)
Duke believed surfing was for everyone and the whines, so impressed him that he wrote:
"Women, as a rule, make better surf-board artists than men. In my experience as an instructor, this has proved to be true on almost every occasion. While for actual strength and endurance men are far superior, women, it seems, have a better sense of balance.”
I’m hopelessly devoted to the Olympics this month. It’s hard to know which event I couldn’t get enough of, but surfing might take the prize.
It's pretty fascinating and I was very interested in the filming and photography of the sport, especially in Tahiti. I found this article This Man Has the Most Dangerous Job at the 2024 Paris Olympics, whose subject matter speaks directly to my question.
The Men’s Journal article looks at professional photographer Ben Thouard who has been photographing surfers for more than 15 years. Incredibly he is the ONLY photographer allowed to shoot the surfers from the water at the Olympics.
Congratulations to Caroline Marks for taking the Gold!
And also Gabriel Medina has a bronze medal and will forever be remembered for this shot! [Getty.]
Congratulations to everyone! Now, let’s go! There’s much more Olympics to be watched!
