Leave No Trace. Keep Our Planet Beautiful

Here is a little piece leftover from last week.

Before a camping trip it’s good to learn some basic outdoor information.

It would be nice if we could all take a Leave No Trace course to learn how to minimize their impact and protect these precious environments.

Pack it in, pack it out” is a simple mantra to follow. Whatever you bring with you to the outdoors, take it back with you or dispose in the correct trash receptacle. Our group will use plastic bags, ziplocks, coolers and more to store and remove trash while we’re camping. That’s including food waste like oranges, banana peels and apples while hiking. I know it seems easy to just throw it aside BUT orange peels take 6 months to decompose. An apple core could take weeks or months. And could attract the wrong wildlife. Plus I, nor does anyone else, want to see your trash, even if it’s biodegradable. You don’t leave your banana peels on your front yard or sofa. (At least I hope not.)

Leave No Trace is built on seven core principles:

1)Plan ahead and prepare: Check the weather, trail conditions, and regulations for your chosen destination. Side note: merino wool is my favorite fabric to wear on camping trips.

2) Travel and camp on durable surfaces: Stick to established trails and campsites to avoid damaging vegetation and soil. And don’t camp in weather conditions you’re not prepared for or have the experience being in. You won’t see me camping in Wyoming in December.

3) Dispose of waste properly: Pack out all trash, and bury human waste in catholes dug 6-8 inches deep and at least 200 feet away from water sources. Or pick it up like you would as a dog. Or bring a portable toilet with you. REI is a great resource for gear and how to’s.

4) Leave what you find: Avoid picking flowers or removing natural objects, and leave cultural artifacts undisturbed. Don’t be THAT person. You know that idiot on the touron page.

5) Minimize campfire impacts: Use established fire rings, keep fires small, and burn all wood to ash. Remember what Smokey The Bear says.

6) Respect wildlife: Observe animals from a distance, store food securely (bear canister, car) and avoid feeding them.

7) Be considerate of other visitors: Keep noise levels down, yield to others on the trail, keep dogs on leash and respect their experience.

These are just a few ways to keep our Earth a beautiful place, while you’re enjoying it. Happy trails!
